Melanie Lam

PharmD-Pharmacy Resident

Melanie Lam Traineeship Year:

Testimonial

As a pharmacy-resident trainee for this year, I have been provided opportunities to develop my skills in managing pediatric patients with various chronic respiratory diseases (e.g., asthma, cystic fibrosis, etc.). I learned about the importance of partnering with patients’ families to optimize each child’s well-being. Another important aspect of this experience was the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team that included pulmonologists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, family advocates, respiratory therapists, other pharmacists, nutritionists, and pharmacy technicians. Taking care of children with complex diseases truly takes an extensive team with a variety of unique skillsets. Appropriate care for children goes beyond clinical guidelines, rather it takes all specialists’ interventions to ensure that each child is able to appropriately access their clinical care. In doing so, clinicians must consider all aspects of life course such as socioeconomic status, environmental exposure, health behaviors, stress, and nutrition. Being a PPC-trainee also allowed me to participate in community outreach and education. One of which that was most memorable was Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Education Day for the local CF community. I was able to work closely with my mentors to present information on complementary and alternative medicine perspectives and its prevalence in the CF community. I am truly grateful for all the memorable experiences I’ve gained with all the other trainees, patients, families and interdisciplinary team.
